FILLING IN THE GAPS

According to the Russiapedia Web site, the story of Mendeleyev’s dream is probably not true. But there is little doubt that discovering the periodic table required both insight and hard work. Part of Mendeleyev’s insight came from realizing that there were surely more elements to be discovered. It had been less than ten years since he had worked with Bunsen and Kirchhoff, and he had seen the number of elements grow from the low sixties to sixty-nine. So when he arranged each group of similar elements in a row by increasing atomic weight, he realized he had to leave some gaps so that the elements also lined up in columns with increasing atomic weights as well.

After two weeks of arranging and rearranging elements, Mendeleyev was satisfied with the chart he had created. He published the periodic table of elements in a paper called “An Attempt at a System of the Elements Based on Their Atomic Weight and Chemical Affinity.” Going from the top to bottom of each column and following columns from left to right, the atomic weights increased, while similar elements, such as the halogens and the oxygen group, appeared in rows. In other words, following the chart by increasing atomic number will reproduce a periodically repeating sequence of physical and chemical properties.
